Reliable Wake On LAN
Leading PC Power Management Software "Auto Shutdown Manager" allows not only intelligent shutdown of computers, laptops and servers but also powering them on via Wake-On-LAN over different network segments and VLANs- and even over the Internet.
Herrenberg, July 2014. Developed by the German supplier EnviProt the PC Power Management solution "Auto Shutdown Manager" known for reliable energy savings in professional environments has been enhanced in the new version by important functions in the area of enterprise Wake-On-LAN. One of the innovations is the introduction of WOL proxies. WOL Proxies come in play where directed broadcasts are not working or are not allowed to use. The administrator can declare computers in remote locations that are already operated mainly in continuous 24/7 operation to act as WOL Proxies for the local network. The central Auto Shutdown Manager Server uses the WOL Proxies then to wake computers in the corresponding locations. A wake-up command to the corresponding WOL proxy is send instead of a WOL broadcasts. Thus, the Wake-on-LAN technology can be centrally controlled and used across the enterprise and subsidiaries without having to configure the firewalls and routers.
Moreover, a Wake-ON-LAN/WAN (WOW) client for JAVA and Android devices has been developed. Both are still in the BETA phase – but can already be tested and used. The WOW Client allows users on road or from their home office to turn on their computers in the company and keep them running as long as they are needed.
Another new feature allows waking virtual machines via standard WOL technics. For this purpose, the virtual machines must only be advertised in the Auto Shutdown Manager. Then incoming WOL Magic Packets broadcasts are evaluated and the corresponding virtual machine gets automatically awaken if the MAC virtual address matches.
Finally, the integration into the Microsoft System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager (SCCM 2012R2) was finished. Thus, individual computers or entire computer collections can be awoken or shut down, rebooted, or put into a power saving mode directly from the Configuration Manager Console.
